This charming semi-detached home offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of Marrickville’s inner-west. The original house, though dilapidated, retained stunning ornate architectural details. The brief was to preserve as much of the home’s old-world charm as possible while introducing a contemporary extension and first-floor addition, thoughtfully designed by Potter & Wilson.

A key challenge in the design process was maximizing the sense of space and light within the home’s small footprint. To meet this challenge, we incorporated an open staircase, extra-high ceilings, wall-to-wall joinery, and full-height cupboards to create a sense of openness and functionality.

The standout feature of the design is the exposed brick wall that runs the length of the new extension. Reclaimed bricks from the renovation were carefully integrated into the kitchen and dining areas, setting the tone for the home’s colour palette. The result is a subtly expressive interior, with textures and colours that complement the original heritage features, creating a seamless blend of past and present.
